Hwaseong Special City held its first ‘contract-grown rice’ harvest event on the 21st at Yangjitteul in Eumyang-ri, Jeongnam-myeon, Hyohang-gu.

The event was attended by officials including Lee Hong-geun, Gyeonggi Provincial Council member, Kim Jo-hyang, Director of Agricultural and Maritime Affairs, Choi Byung-ju, Mayor of Hyohang-gu, Lee Taek-gu, Mayor of Byeongjeom-gu, Kim Kyung-sik, Head of Jeongnam Agricultural Cooperative, and Choi Hak-un, Chairman of the Social Organization Council, as well as local farmers, who shared in the joy of this year's first rice harvest.

The rice harvested that day was the Hitomebore variety, known as ‘rice that wins at first sight,’ which bore fruit 117 days after transplanting on April 26th.

The harvest area covers approximately 12,684 square meters (3,840 pyeong). Hitomebore is characterized by its exceptional sweetness and stickiness when cooked, a fragrant aroma, transparent grain appearance, and lustrous shine.

Woo Dong-hak, Village Chief of Eumyang 2-ri, who led the first rice harvest, said, “I am delighted to have successfully harvested the rice that we carefully cultivated,” and added, “I will work hard to produce rice of excellent taste and quality so that it reaches the dinner tables of the 1.07 million residents of Hwaseong Special City.”

Kim Jo-hyang, Director of Agricultural and Maritime Affairs, said, “It is meaningful to share this year's first rice harvest with local farmers,” and stated, “We will carefully monitor challenges in the field and implement practical support so that farmers can produce quality rice in a stable farming environment.”

Meanwhile, Hwaseong Special City is supporting 1.7 billion won for seedbed soil supply projects and 5.575 billion won for rice pest control projects in 2026 to establish a stable rice production foundation and ease the management burden on farmers.
