Kang Deuk-gu: "Was Data Breach of Democratic Party Members Reported to Former Chair Jung Chung-rae?"...Proposes Fact-Finding Task Force
[News S=Reporter Cheon Ui-hyun] Rep. Kang Deuk-gu of the Democratic Party (Anyang Man-an District) directly raised questions about the responsibility of former party leadership, including former Chair Jung Chung-rae, regarding the massive personal data breach resulting from a hacking attack on the party's member community.
Rep. Kang stated on the evening of the 9th through Facebook, "The Democratic Party's front yard has been breached," and "Member personal information was leaked last September, and confirmed victims so far number approximately 17,000." He pointed out that "the party failed to even detect this fact for 11 months."
Former Secretary General Cho Seung-rae previously stated, "I deeply regret the responsibility and sincerely apologize," but Rep. Kang said, "It cannot end with just an apology." In particular, regarding the party's explanation that "it detected abnormal signs and conducted inspections by the management company but received a response of 'no abnormalities,"" Rep. Kang pointed out the contradiction: "The party knew of abnormal signs and conducted inspections, yet claims to have been unaware of the hacking."
Targeting former Chair Jung Chung-rae, Rep. Kang asked, "Was this fact reported to you at the time?" and claimed, "If you received the report but did nothing, it is a clear dereliction of duty, and if you were not even informed, it indicates a complete collapse of the party's operational system." He emphasized, "The hacking of member information breached the 'confidentiality' of political freedom guaranteed by the Constitution."
As a response measure, he demanded an emergency Supreme Council meeting and urged investigation into whether there were additional leaks beyond the confirmed 17,000, the security of information on 1.5 million members, whether the fact was reported to former Chair Jung Chung-rae, and follow-up measures. He also proposed establishing a fact-finding task force once the new leadership is formed.
Meanwhile, regarding this incident, other candidates seeking Supreme Council positions, including Kim Yong and Kim Min-seok, are also raising questions about the responsibility of the former leadership, with calls for accountability spreading within the party.
