Suwon, Uiwang, Gunpo, and Ansan Cities Urge Reflection of Shinbundang Line Extension in National Railroad Network Plan
Suwon Special City Mayor Lee Jae-jun and mayors of four cities jointly petitioned the government to "reflect the 'Shinbundang Line extension to Suwon, Uiwang, Gunpo, and Ansan' in the 5th National Railroad Network Construction Plan."
Suwon Mayor Lee Jae-jun, Uiwang Mayor Kim Sung-je, Gunpo Mayor Han Dae-hee, and Ansan Vice Mayor Heo Nam-seok announced the joint petition and signed it on the 11th at the Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly Briefing Room.
They stated, "The Shinbundang Line extension starting from Gwanggyo in Suwon and continuing through Uiwang, Gunpo, and Ansan will enhance connectivity in the southwestern Gyeonggi region and serve as an important foundation for balanced regional development and improved quality of life for citizens," and emphasized that "to advance the transition to a sustainable era, expansion of rail infrastructure that can dramatically improve access to major cities is necessary."
They further stated, "The railroad line we are petitioning for aligns with the national policy of 'transit first, then settlement,' and will serve as a national strategic asset with strategic value for future generation prosperity and urban development by inducing activation of advanced industries," adding "for improved wide-area transportation environment for southwestern Seoul metropolitan area citizens and advancement of the national railroad network, the Shinbundang Line extension to Suwon, Uiwang, Gunpo, and Ansan must be reflected in the 5th National Railroad Network Construction Plan."
The Shinbundang Line extension to Suwon, Uiwang, Gunpo, and Ansan is a 14.54km-scale (Gwanggyo Station to Ansan Banwol Station) wide-area railway line that was petitioned to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's "5th National Railroad Network Construction Plan" in May 2024, and is expected to play an important role in constructing a railroad network in the southwestern Seoul metropolitan area.
The joint petition event was attended by Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly members Park Ok-bun, Lee O-su, Choi Sang-gyu, and Han Un-ok representing the respective districts.
Suwon Mayor Lee Jae-jun said, "Suwon City has exerted efforts in constructing wide-area railroad networks such as the 'Southern Gyeonggi Wide-area Railroad,' the 'Seoul Metropolitan Area Express Railway (GTX)-C Line,' and the 'Dongtan-Indeokwon Line,' and has joined hands with neighboring cities to solve transportation issues in southern Gyeonggi," adding "the Shinbundang Line extension is expected to serve as a driving force for restructuring southwestern Gyeonggi urban space."
