Gyeonggi Province Secures Record 95.8 Billion Won in State Funding for Border Area Support Projects
The 2027 state funding for border area support projects aimed at promoting growth in northern Gyeonggi's border regions has reached a record-high 95.8 billion won. This represents an increase of 31.6 billion won compared to the previous year, and the province hailed it as a success of its state funding acquisition efforts.
According to Gyeonggi Province on the 16th, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety officially notified the province of the government budget plan containing these details on the 15th.
Analyzing the border area state funding projects, first, 77.8 billion won has been allocated to the 'Special Situation Area Development Project' to improve residential conditions in underdeveloped areas, a 37.7% increase from 56.5 billion won in 2026.
The 'Border Region Development Support Project,' which supports comprehensive development and growth in border areas, also reflects 18.1 billion won for 2027, surging 132.7% from 7.8 billion won in 2026.
The province explained that these budget plans are lump-sum subsidy projects under the National Regional Balanced Development Special Account, and since the total amount does not change during the National Assembly's deliberation process, state funding support for next year is effectively confirmed.
Specifically, the Special Situation Area Development Project budget is allocated to citizen-oriented projects including △expansion of basic living infrastructure △increasing regional income △improving regional landscapes and △strengthening resident capacity, with nine projects including 'Gapyeong County Transportation Hub Public Bus Depot Construction' and 'Yeoncheon Jungok Relic Complex Utilization Project' selected as new projects for 2027. The total number of projects to be pursued is 44.
The Border Region Development Support Project budget is allocated to △activating ecological and peace tourism △improving residential conditions △establishing foundations for balanced development and △creating inter-Korean exchange and cooperation bases. Representative projects include 'Peace Road Streetscape Improvement Project,' a linked project among three cities and counties of Yangju, Dongducheon, and Yeoncheon, and 'Hantangang Region Thematic Border Hub Development Project,' a linked project between Pocheon and Yeoncheon, totaling 10 projects. Four new projects including 'Pocheon Cheongseong Mountain Comprehensive Development Project' have been confirmed for 2027.
Jo Jang-seok, director of the Balanced Development Planning Office, said, "The state funding secured this time will serve as a catalyst to inject new growth momentum into border areas with poor development conditions and create tangible changes that residents can feel in their daily lives. Going forward, we will continue to cooperate with the government and municipalities to promote balanced development and sustained growth in northern Gyeonggi Province without any disruption."
Meanwhile, Gyeonggi Province Governor Choo Mi-ae has been actively pursuing state funding acquisition by meeting with Park Hong-geun, Minister of the Office of Planning and Budget in July, and Yi Gwang-jae, chairman of the National Assembly's Budget and Accounts Committee on September 10, explaining the necessity of major Gyeonggi Province projects and requesting increased state funding and reflection. In addition, Gyeonggi Province held a 'Briefing Session on Major State Funding Projects for 2027 Gyeonggi Province' at the National Assembly in July, chaired by Kim Seong-joong, Vice-Minister of the Interior and Safety, targeting aides of Gyeonggi Province district representatives, and continues activities to secure state funding for next year.
