7AM War Kim Min-seok Drew Out 50,000 Viewers Outside News Factory
Kim Eo-jun did not lose. But Kim Min-seok gained 50,000 viewers.
The Democratic Party of Korea launched its first live broadcast on its official YouTube channel 'Democratic Party TV' at 7 a.m. on the 1st. It turned on the microphone five minutes before 'Kim Eo-jun's Humility is Difficult News Factory,' the flagship progressive political YouTube channel.
On the first day, simultaneous viewers for News Factory were approximately 190,000-200,000, while Democratic Party TV had 51,000-55,000. Numbers alone show Kim Eo-jun's overwhelming victory. Democratic Party TV viewers amounted to only one-quarter of News Factory's viewership.
However, this comparison alone makes it difficult to explain the actual changes that occurred in the first broadcast.
Despite the emergence of Democratic Party TV, News Factory viewers did not decline. It maintained the recent broadcast's peak level of around 190,000 viewers. Simultaneously, Democratic Party TV attracted over 50,000 separate viewers.
If Kim, the party leader, failed to poach Kim Eo-jun's audience but instead attracted the viewer demographic that Kim Eo-jun had not reached, then the first day's competition should be read quite differently.
The real news from this '7AM War' is not the weight class difference between 190,000 and 50,000.
The question is: who are these 50,000 viewers who were outside News Factory?
■ Kim Eo-jun Retained; Kim Min-seok Expanded
Before Democratic Party TV's launch, YouTube statistics site PlayBoard recorded News Factory's highest simultaneous viewers at approximately 190,000 among its recent 15 broadcasts. During Democratic Party TV's first broadcast, News Factory also recorded approximately 190,000-200,000 viewers.
Although a competing channel appeared in the same time slot, no clear disruption appeared in News Factory's numbers. If existing viewers had migrated en masse to Democratic Party TV, News Factory's simultaneous connections should have declined first, but there were no such signs on the first day.
Since individual user migration patterns and simultaneous viewing are not disclosed, the exact churn rate cannot be calculated. It is also possible that News Factory viewers would have far exceeded 200,000 without Democratic Party TV. Therefore, one cannot definitively state a '0% churn rate.'
However, the observed numbers speak clearly. There is no evidence that Democratic Party TV undermined News Factory's foundation, and the overall morning political broadcast viewership grew while News Factory remained stable.
Simply combining simultaneous viewers from both broadcasts yields approximately 240,000-250,000. Compared to News Factory's previous peak of 190,000 simultaneous viewers, this represents approximately 30% larger scale. However, given uncertainty about simultaneous viewing and each channel's counting timing, this cannot be definitively attributed to pure viewership increase.
Even considering the possibility that some viewers watched both broadcasts simultaneously, the fact that Kim, the party leader, attracted over 50,000 viewers on the first day is encouraging. This is because he entered not a zero-sum game dividing News Factory and existing viewers, but confirmed separate demand.
If Kim Eo-jun's retention of his viewers constitutes victory, Kim, the party leader, expanded the playing field itself.
■ Why Did 50,000 Viewers Choose Democratic Party TV Over News Factory?
Not all 50,000 viewers on Democratic Party TV can be definitively categorized as 'new viewers.' Existing 'Democratic Party' subscribers, curiosity about the channel launch, and users wanting to check Kim's first appearance may have been mixed in.
Nevertheless, it is worth examining why they chose Democratic Party TV over News Factory.
First, there may be a viewer demographic that supports the Democratic Party and President Lee Jae-myung but has begun distancing itself from Kim Eo-jun's broadcast.
Following recent local elections and the party leadership race, the Democratic Party's support base split into pro-Lee and pro-Chung factions. Kim Eo-jun was perceived as close to Chung Dong-young, while Kim, the party leader who served as President Lee's first prime minister, emerged as a focal point for the pro-Lee faction.
As conflict expanded to the point that even YouTubers were divided into respective camps, News Factory ceased to be a single public forum where the entire Democratic Party support base gathered. People emerged who supported the Democratic Party but disagreed with News Factory's editorial stance or format.
Democratic Party TV provided an alternative space for those who had nowhere else to go. There is a possibility that the first day's numbers showed that leaving Kim Eo-jun does not necessarily mean leaving the Democratic Party.
There is also demand to confirm the party's official position without external commentary.
Kim, the party leader, stated regarding the broadcast's background: "There are many good broadcasts, but various commentaries sometimes cause confusion." He also said he hopes it becomes a 'tone-setting broadcast' that selects and explains the Democratic Party's daily direction with at least one explanation each time.
This statement challenges the way political YouTubers have filtered and interpreted the Democratic Party's messages. It can be read as an attempt to end the structure where YouTubers first define meaning before the party speaks, and politicians are then dragged along by that interpretation.
Long-form political YouTube viewers represent another variable.
News Factory's lengthy broadcasts, strong commentary, and real-time chat culture are advantages for highly loyal viewers but entry barriers for non-highly politically engaged users. If Democratic Party TV establishes compressed 40-minute broadcasts centered on the party leader's explanations, it can capture demand from those wanting to quickly check only official policies on their commute.
Ultimately, the 50,000 likely includes pro-Lee supporters who have turned their backs on Kim Eo-jun, party members wanting to verify the party's 'official' position, and users fatigued by existing political YouTube conventions.
If these can be consolidated into a fixed viewer base, Democratic Party TV becomes not an imitation of News Factory but a separate political media outlet.
■ 50,000 Created by 'Pro-Lee Sentiment'... New Direct Line to Party Heart
The 50,000 gathered at Democratic Party TV may represent a result of recent shifts in the Democratic Party's grassroots support.
Influential YouTubers in Democratic Party politics have not been mere commentators. They have interpreted party issues and designated politicians to support, while politicians appeared on broadcasts requesting party members' support and donations. External YouTube substantially replaced functions that the party itself should have handled regarding public discourse and political mobilization.
However, in this party leadership race, whether 'who can create achievements with President Lee Jae-myung's administration' became a more important criterion than specific YouTubers' assessments.
As competition between pro-Lee and pro-Chung supporters converged on 'who will support President Lee's administration's success,' political distance from the president became more important than YouTuber endorsement. This is how Kim, the party leader who served as President Lee's first prime minister, became the representative figure of the pro-Lee faction in that dynamic.
In cumulative preference voting, Kim received 54.08%, defeating Chung Dong-young. 'Pro-Lee Sentiment' centered on the president replaced the YouTuber's role in driving votes. (August 19 report: "Democratic Party's Grassroots Support Center Shifts from YouTuber to President")
Democratic Party TV is the first scene of this shift in grassroots sentiment translated to broadcasting. Kim plans to appear as a fixed guest even after regular programming following the pilot period. By moving beyond the existing structure where presidential and party messages reached the public through external YouTuber interpretation, they aim to create a direct connection channel where the party leader meets party members through an official channel.
If President Lee conducted live streams of Cabinet meetings, policy discussions, and town halls to meet the people before media editing, Kim, the party leader, seeks to meet party members before political YouTubers' commentary. This represents an expansion of the president's 'live politics' to the ruling party level.
The significance of Democratic Party TV's 50,000 lies here. If these are not merely opening-day onlookers but viewers who came to directly hear the president and the Democratic Party's official messages, then the party has secured a new circuit to reach grassroots sentiment without external YouTubers as intermediaries.
■ Democratic Party Claims 'Correct Answer'... Will It Secure Entertainment Too?
Before the first broadcast, Kim, the party leader, compared Democratic Party TV to a 'textbook' and other media to 'workbooks' on SNS on the 30th of last month.
The party's official position is that Democratic Party TV will responsibly deliver the party's official stance, while entertainment and commentary diversification will be handled by private YouTube channels.
However, textbooks and workbooks are not equivalent. If a textbook presents correct answers and standards, a workbook repeats and supplements them. Kim's metaphor appears to reflect the understanding that Democratic Party TV should present the party's 'correct answer' first, while private YouTube should only play an explanatory role.
This reads as a declaration to reclaim official interpretation authority that has passed to external YouTubers. It means reversing the order where YouTubers define issues before the party's position emerges and politicians are dragged along that frame.
Conversely, 'textbook' also represents a limitation Democratic Party TV must overcome.
Textbooks are official and accurate but generally dry. If the party only delivers its established position and excludes inconvenient counterarguments, Democratic Party TV becomes propaganda rather than a public forum. The 50,000 entering the first broadcast might verify the party's official message and then return to private YouTube with entertainment and debate.
The private YouTube called a 'workbook' is precisely strong at that point. News Factory keeps viewers watching longer through diverse panels, commentary, satire, and real-time chat. Unbound by official answers, it can expand agendas faster and more freely than Democratic Party TV.
For Democratic Party TV to succeed, it must maintain the textbook's credibility while directly confronting its limitations. Beyond merely reciting official positions, it must address questions the party finds uncomfortable answering.
Ultimately, Democratic Party TV's competitiveness emerges not from declaring 'we have the correct answer' but from disclosing how that answer was formed and enduring counterarguments.
■ '7AM War' Unfolding on Kim Eo-jun's Home Ground
On the first day, Kim Eo-jun's stronghold remained unshaken. News Factory maintained around 190,000 viewers despite a competing channel's emergence. There is no basis to claim Democratic Party TV poached News Factory viewers.
However, Kim, the party leader, separately attracted 50,000 viewers from outside the stadium. Democratic Party supporters who turned their backs on News Factory, party members wanting to directly verify the party's official position, or users who had not watched lengthy political YouTube might have gathered in Democratic Party TV's new audience section.
Until now, the ruling coalition's morning broadcast was Kim Eo-jun's home ground. Kim, the party leader's, contest does not lie in defeating Kim Eo-jun on that home ground. It lies in proving that different political demand and viewing conventions exist in the time slot Kim Eo-jun monopolized.
A political circle official stated: "The morning political broadcast's influence that Kim Eo-jun built will likely not be shaken short-term, but the fact that Democratic Party TV gathered over 50,000 viewers without News Factory's decline means separate political demand exists. If Party leader Kim transcends the opening-day effect and binds these as fixed viewers, it is expected to open a new horizon different from existing broadcasts on Kim Eo-jun's home ground."
