Yongin Mayor Lee Sang-il: "Rowing is a Cooperative Sport About Consideration and Unity"

Yongin Special City Mayor Lee Sang-il attended the "2026 Yongin Special City Mayor's Cup National Amateur Rowing Championship" held on the 5th at the Yongin Rowing Stadium in Giheung-gu, where he delivered messages of encouragement to the athletes.

The competition, hosted by Yongin Special City and the Yongin City Sports Association and organized by the Yongin City Rowing Association, drew approximately 400 amateur rowers from across the nation, including about 120 enthusiasts from the Yongin area.

In his opening remarks, Mayor Lee stated, "I believe rowing is an attractive sport where, along with individual skills such as physical strength, the spirit of cooperation—considering one another and pooling our strength—is very important. Not only for Yongin Special City, but Yongin Special City will actively support the continuous development of rowing in Korea."

After his opening remarks, Mayor Lee presented awards to winning teams from the women's under-18 quadruple sculls (a competition where four athletes each row two oars) and the men's college-level eight-oar (a competition with four rowers and one coxswain) held earlier that morning.

In the women's under-18 quadruple sculls, Rowing Pro A took 1st place, Rowing Pro B took 2nd place, and NRC took 3rd place. In the men's college-level eight-oar, Korea University of Foreign Studies A finished 1st, Korea University of Foreign Studies B finished 2nd, and Yonsei University A finished 3rd.

The city hosted the "25th National Indoor Rowing Championship and Yongin Special City National Amateur Indoor Rowing Championship" at Kangnam University's Mogyangwan on March 14. Following this "2026 Yongin Special City Mayor's Cup National Amateur Rowing Championship," the city plans to hold another rowing competition for local enthusiasts in November.

The city is also meticulously preparing for the 2027 National Sports Festival by renovating the rowing facility and improving the boat launch area.

During the "Aichi · Nagoya Asian Games" to be held in September and October this year, Kang Woo-kyul and Lee Jong-hee, athletes of the City's Industrial Sports Club, will compete as national representatives in pursuit of medals. Athlete Kang will compete in the quadruple sculls, while Athlete Lee will compete in the double sculls (a competition where two athletes each row two oars).
