Suwon's Yeonghung Arboretum Formally Registered as Public Arboretum with Korea Forest Service

Suwon's Yeonghung Arboretum was formally registered as a public arboretum with the Korea Forest Service on August 28. With this registration, Suwon City now operates two public arboretums, including the Ilwol Arboretum.

The Yeonghung Arboretum, which opened in May 2023, spans 145,058 square meters in the Yeongdeok-dong area of Yeongdeong-gu. It currently holds plant resources of 1,282 species and 297,542 individual specimens, meeting the registration standards for public arboretums in terms of facilities and plant resources.

Based on the public arboretum registration, Suwon City will strengthen the Yeonghung Arboretum's citizen education and guidance functions. The city plans to participate in collaborative projects such as arboretum and garden stamp tours and secure professional personnel including arboretum coordinators.

The city will also expand plant resource conservation functions. It will pursue designation as a national rare and endemic plant conservation institution and continue preservation outside natural habitats, propagation and management of rare and endemic plants, and research on securing and conserving diverse plant resources.

A Suwon City official stated, "The public arboretum registration of Yeonghung Arboretum has allowed us to expand arboretum services for citizens," adding, "We will leverage the characteristics of both arboretums so that citizens can experience plants and garden culture up close."
