Lee Dong-ki Appointed Deputy Mayor of Suwon After 10 Months of Vacancy; Takes Office on the 14th

Lee Dong-ki, former regional committee chair of the Democratic Party for the Sokcho, Inje, Goseong, and Yangyang areas, will assume office as Deputy Mayor of Suwon City, a position that has been vacant for nearly 10 months.

According to Suwon City and other sources on the 11th, the new Deputy Mayor is scheduled to officially take office on the 14th. The city launched a public recruitment for the Deputy Mayor position, an open-ended position, in July, and finalized the successful candidate on the 18th of last month after document and interview screening.

The Deputy Mayor position of Suwon City had been vacant for approximately 10 months since former Deputy Mayor Hyun Geun-taek stepped down at the end of last year to run in the June 3 local elections. With Lee Dong-ki's inauguration as Deputy Mayor, Suwon City's prolonged "single Deputy Mayor system" will also be resolved.

Deputy Mayor Lee was born in August 1974 and earned a master's degree in political science, majoring in political and administrative leadership, from the Graduate School of Public Administration at Yonsei University.

Before entering politics, he engaged in anti-corruption and information disclosure movements in civil society. He served as director of the office of the Anti-Corruption Citizens' Coalition's Sokcho, Goseong, and Yangyang headquarters and participated in lawsuits demanding the disclosure of administrative expenses of local government heads and provincial assembly speakers. He later served as special committee chair for Seorak Mountain development of the Uri Party and worked as an administrator in the Presidential Secretariat during the Roh Moo-hyun administration.

In the Democratic Party, he served as regional committee chair for Sokcho, Inje, Goseong, and Yangyang, vice chair of the Policy Committee, and director of the Democratic Research Institute. He also participated in the presidential election strategy committee for presidential candidate Moon Jae-in and served as a special committee member for public communication at the National Committee for Balanced National Development during the Moon Jae-in administration.

He also has experience related to public institutions. His main career includes serving as director of the Construction Industry Information Institute, non-standing director of the Korea Mine Reclamation Corporation, and integrity citizen auditor of the Small Business Corporation.

In particular, Deputy Mayor Lee is classified as a close, non-affiliated pro-Lee Jae-myung figure with President Lee Jae-myung. In the 21st presidential election, he served as vice director of the Political Affairs Division 2 of the Democratic Party candidate Lee Jae-myung's central election strategy committee. In the local community, Deputy Mayor Lee is known as a figure who has maintained political ties since President Lee's tenure as mayor of Seongnam and governor of Gyeonggi Province.
