Pianist Hwang Su-yeon Holds Solo Recital at Seoul Arts Center on 9th [Culture S]

Pianist Hwang Su-yeon will hold a solo recital at 7:30 p.m. on the 9th at Inchun Art Hall, Seoul Arts Center. The stage will be filled with works left by Beethoven and Schumann during the most turbulent periods of their lives.

The program consists of Beethoven's 'Fantasia' Op.77 and 'Tempest' Sonata Op.31-2, and Schumann's 'Davidsbündlertänze' Op.6. The program is structured to examine how different crises and emotions—war, hearing loss, and love—are reflected in the music of the two composers.

The 'Fantasia' performed in part one is a piece completed in 1809 when Napoleon's army invaded Vienna, containing spontaneous imagination unfettered by formal constraints amid the terror of war and deteriorating hearing. The ensuing 'Tempest' Sonata (1802) is a work from the period when Beethoven accepted the frustration of hearing loss and pursued experimental techniques, and is uniquely written in D minor among his 32 piano sonatas.

Part two's 'Davidsbündlertänze' is a collection of 18 pieces containing the overwhelming emotions of Schumann and Clara's reunion in 1837 after separating due to her father's opposition, and is considered a representative work of Schumann's piano music.

Hwang Su-yeon said, "Sad emotions such as war, despair, and hardship are ultimately a process to see the light of positivity," adding, "I hope to walk that journey together through the works of Beethoven and Schumann."
