On the 19th, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Korea Tourism Organization released an intriguing tourism map. It is called the 'Republic of Korea Attraction Discovery 100X100 Project.' This is big data compiled from recommendations by 100 travel experts and votes from approximately 40,000 citizens, organizing over 6,300 hidden travel destinations nationwide. More striking than impressive numbers is the direction of public sentiment. The data points to what we truly seek in travel today.

People Seek 'Warmth of a Meal' Over 'Boasting Material'
Surprisingly, the top-voted locations were neither grand natural landscapes nor large museums. The top keywords chosen by the public were 'affordable restaurants,' 'long-established old shops,' and 'seasonal foods.' Rather than glamorous resorts or Instagram-worthy eateries, neighborhood bakeries, traditional markets, and simple rice restaurants topped the list of attractions.

This marks a shift from 'display travel'—meant to show others where you've been—to 'restorative travel' that quietly soothes tired daily life. The standard for travel is changing from something to boast about to the measure of peace one finds in a place.

Gyeonggi Province's Strength, and Suwon Hwaseong as a Historic Landmark
Among local governments nationwide, Gyeonggi Province demonstrated solid strength by listing 882 locations. At the center stands 'Suwon Hwaseong.' Suwon Hwaseong received the most votes among numerous attractions in Gyeonggi Province, achieving 'most votes in the region.' It also ranked 8th nationally in the category-based count 'walled cities and mountain fortresses connecting time,' confirming its unwavering popularity.

The fortress walls imbued with King Jeongjo's reform philosophy are no longer artifacts trapped behind museum glass. They are an evening walk where one can gaze at city lights at dusk, and a sanctuary of daily life where citizens leisurely stroll on weekends. When centuries of history don't remain in the past but naturally overlap with present life, cultural heritage truly gains its vitality.

Cafés Below the Fortress Walls, the Aroma of Old Shops' Fried Foods…The Intersection of History and Alleyways
Suwon appeals as an even more diverse city precisely because it is not confined to the fortress alone. Following the castle path downward, the savory aroma of the old fried chicken street and the bustle of Namun Market stimulate the senses. Along Haenggung-dong alley (Haengridangil), small tea houses and workshops filled with individual tastes abound, and a short drive away reveals the open waterfront of Gwanggyo Lake Park.

Historical exploration, alley wandering, and lakeside strolls naturally connect within one city. A place where one can experience both the novelty travel brings and its comfort without traveling far. The high support Suwon received in this survey likely stems from this luxurious harmony.

Meeting Real Stories on the Road
The value of a well-crafted tourism map lies not in listing remarkable destinations. Rather, it lies in reminding us that precious value is hidden even in the alley before a house we casually passed, in the dining table of an old restaurant, and in a small but dignified garden.

Notably, the 'Suwon National Heritage Night Tour' held around Suwon Hwaseong has been extended through the 30th. Why not take a leisurely walk along the fortress walls this weekend? A cup of tea at a small café beneath the fortress, sharing warmth at a long-established shop. The landscape of travel that citizens themselves drew on the map is not far from us.
